Gents,

It seems that the recent release of Richard Marsh’s Battle of the Bulge scenario pack, prompted some gaming on the theme.

So, this weekend, we played another Ardennes scenario, modeled on Baraque de Fraiture actions.

In reality, this was a Wargames Journal scenario [The End of the Road], that was quickly adapted for our own skirmish set – Combat Group – depicting the actions of the 2.SS-Pz-Div against the 325th Glider Inf. on 23/December/1944.

The Tabletop, viewed from the US player (José Pargana) defensive perimeter (the blue pins, are Objectives/Victory markers).

Houses from GW/Citadel with an odd Scenic Effects, roads from JR Miniatures (rubber cobblestone) & Fonzie’s Models (dirt tracks), walls from Bellona’s vac-u-form and Trees by Eki (those plastic pine trees) and Heki (railway trees). The rest from Hovels and scratch-build.

The table from the German player view (Artur Ramos).

The US tactic was simply, as they have very few units available – a couple of squads, a 0,30” MMG, a Bazooka team, 2x M4A3(75)w and a M5A1 – covering the roads all around with the AFVs on reserve (mostly covering the main road).

The German player having more options, decided to make a faint attack from the main road, as a decoy, and flanking the position with their main forces, from south.

The game clock was set on 16,30h, which means a dark sunset, so reduced visibility.

The German first moves, with a decoy 251 and a lonely squad, quickly drawing fire from a 0,30” LMG and with a Bazooka team laying in waiting (SHQ and Italeri figures) – unnoticed, for the US player was a Pz.IV lay down with opportunity fire, hidden on the tree line (it only was revealed after the game, as didn’t manage to fire shot).

Figures from Italeri and 251 from Hasegawa.

After some 2 turns exchanging some MG firing, Pargana activated one of his armoured elements (Easy Model ready made) to deal with that pesky 251.

At the same time the German’s second group appeared on the table, right on the left US flank, surprising him and disturbing his planning (Hasegawa’s 251, with Revell’s Pz.IV)

The US player reacted, activating his second M4A3(75)w (Easy Model) and the M5A1 (MMS) just moved to hide from Pz.IV view – end of moving phase…

…on the firing phase, the Germans manage to be the first, and not only managing to KO the M4 on the road, but also to debilitating a Para Squad that was on the road, just in front of them.

While that, the last M4 exchange some shots, with one of the Pz.IV, while receiving shots from both of them – but it survived.

Next turn another German group was activated, and things started to look gloomier for José Pargana, as his last M4 was neutralized by German artillery, and was later on the turn, KO by the Pz.IV.

Pz.IV from Revell and figures from Caesar & Italeri

His M5A1 was hit by the Pz.IV that just enter the table (he decided to aim for the 251, and missed several shots) and after some Moral test, they bail out.

The Germans pressed on, managing to grab a Victory position, and after that the overall US units decided to call off.

Another fun and intense game.

Thanks for looking and any comments are welcome, as always.

I really like the cart in the street for a roadblock, neat stuff! If you happen to play ASL at all, the newly rereleased Baraque de Fraiture/ Parker's Crossroads module is great.
