Does Anyone know wether there was a specific helmet for the 432 commander and driver during the 80's, similar to the tankies helmet.
I did all my mechanised service on saracens and briefly on 432's in Berlin in the early 70's , and it was always a beret and headphones, or if a helmet was need it was always the standad infantry helmet

Any clues most welcome

Dave, I don't believe that the helmet got further than the Scimitar crews in the recce platoons. I know it was 70's but we weren't given the helmet for the Rarden turrets.

I agree with Alan.

I remember our battlegroup Infantry Bn. (still in MK 1 petrol 432`s in 1980`s!!) as wearing staff user headsets and beret or staff user headsets under their helmets.

Hi Dave,

My last unit was mechanised, with 432's, (1995/6) and I can definitely confirm that we just wore standard kevlar helmets over the headphones. It was a matter of persoanl taste (or if whatever they had in the stores) whether you used the Clansman throat mike or a boom mike.

Sorry this is a late reply but I just joined.

As a warrior battalion we had crew helmets available in 1990 - also given to CVR and 432 crewmen but I can say when they turned up - we avoided them anyway and wore kevlar with PRC headsets underneath until the Active Noise Reduction (ANR) headsets came out around '93 - 94?

Regards,

Stephen
