For the next group build I decided to use some of Liberation's '67-'73 Egyptians to make a small unit of assault commandos for the Suez Crossing during the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

Here's the beginning of the group:

There was one figure with a broken gun so I decided to convert him into a flamethrower figure with some extra bits. This is my first attept at figure conversion. The tank came out a little big, but that should look OK on the table. You can see him further along in the second row of the first pic.

In the back row I added some brass rod to one of the gunner figures to make a standard bearer because what's the point of capturing one of the Bar-Lev line fortifications if you can raise your damn flag over it?

The painting has begun.

The commandos had a sand colored uniform with brown blotches. At this point in the painting it looks awful, but I'm hoping that once the shading, inking and highlighting is done, they'll get better.

OK, I took this figure through most of the process this morning and now I'm feeling a bit better about my plan.

Sorry about the sideways pic, I was in a rush to get it posted before the twins wake up!

Theres a great life size diorama in the Egyptian Army Museum (which is in Saladin`s Citadel in Cairo) which show commandoes storming ashore from rubber assault boats with the leading guy carrying a flag. The whole thing is positioned in an anti-chamber with the walls and ceiling painted (like a panoramic shot) above you see Israeli aircraft dodging (or not - BOOM!) SAMs. The whole thing is very effective.

Nice little museum, lots of interesting kit and weapons, outside is a Sherman with Dozer blade, another Sherman with AMX turret.

The Egyptians actually reenacted the crossing after the war for the benefit of cameras. If you want to see some of that footage oddly set to the Pirates fo the Caribbean theme, check out this video

Salpao-

Yes the Sagger figure is wonderful, but compliments should go to Rolf. What you see is pretty much the casting as you get it, I didn't do any conversion on this one.

I based them on pennies with a little sand glued on and then sprayed them with generic white spray paint.

Got a little more work done on this group.

I added a hose from the tank to the projector of the flamethrower. This fig needs a little cleaning, but is basically ready to paint.

Here's the first group of 4- a machine gunner with a RPD, an AK, the Sagger launcher and a light mortar. The assault commandos used the mortar to clear paths through the minefields around the fortified posts.

And some close ups:

I decided to do a mix with some figures having the camo jacket and trousers and some just having the jacket with plain sand-colored trousers. I'm not sure this really has much on an effect, but maybe when there are more figures it will add some visual variety.

Let me know if you have any comments or reccomendations.
