The assault probably would have worked if that squad hadn't been mortared and shot up on its run in. Airborne squads can take a lot of punishement before they falter, but this one was just too battered to make it. If they had reached the building, the German units inside probably would have surendered as their morale is hanging by a thread.

Got the next turn in over the weekend. These pics are a little fuzzy because I didn't have access to my tripod.

The US squad that broke last turn got shot up MORE this turn and is now in full screaming rout for the rear. There is now only an airborne command squad left outside the gate, the rest of the US forces having passed behind the farm.

Resistance in the farm probably won't last much longer now that one of the American tanks is pumping 75mm HE point blank into the ground floor.

To make matters worse for the farm defenders, the other US tank has taken up a hull down position from which they can take the whole complex under fire.

Suppressive fire has broken the German squad that was defending behind the farm, leaving the German with one effective squad left other than their command units. This terrible picture shows the last Grman squad defending a hill position with the other broken squad routing behind them.

Is there any good news for the Germans? Well, their reinforcements arrive next turn. I changed what I was originally going to give them, because I'd painted up some new stuff and I was itching to use it. They will now receive-
-1 command squad mounted in a Sd.250
-1 panzerschreck squad
-1 panzergrenadier squad (including a panzerfaust)
-1 StuH 42
Will that be enough? They would probably much rather have the Mk. IV's I was originally going to give them, but too bad.

The battle is entering a new phase.

Life continues to suck for the Germans in the farm.

I think the US player has given up the idea of assaulting the place and is content just to pound it into rubble.

The American player is making a big push on their far right hoping to outflank the remaining German units on the table. One of those units get a fleeting shot on an American squad just as they were about to make cover.

The rest of the American are moving up to take that German squad under fire.

OK, here's where things get interesting.

The German counter attack has arrived, such as it is. Now the important thing is that these guys are fresh troops. There's not many of them, but they'll have a lot more staying power than many of the worn down American squads. If they can exert their power at the right point, the US attack could collapse.

From the US perspective, this certainly changes the whole ballgame.

Stay tuned!

It is good to see this game still running. Love the colour scheme on your 250 and STUH. Next few turns are going to get interesting for the paras.

The American player rushed his last squad at the farm to assault the main building. The 2 Geman squads in here had already ceased fighting a couple of turns ago, and quickly surrendered. There are still a few members of the German platoon command in the barn (which is now on fire) but for now the first objective has been captured.

This allows the tanks to start moving up to support the leading edge of the attack.

And what's happening up there? Well, the panzergrenadiers are jockeying their position seeking out targets.

The StuH commander totally blew his spotting chance, so instead of seeing a hedgerow packed with paratroopers, he sees this:

The American squad in the field made it to cover, but not without taking a couple of casualties.

They are feeling pretty hung out to dry at the moment.

The following two pictures nicely set up the drama for the next turn. The US tank rolling forward has just caught sight of the assault gun.

And vice versa

The intervening hedge actually makes this a much worse shot than it looks like from the images, but it still makes for a suspenseful ending.

Units are card-activated in this game, so we'll see who gets first draw.

Cracking Sam.

You and I have a lot in common in the way we game and I think that it also looks spot on as well as playing well.

This turn is a great example of why double-blind games are a hoot. OK, so last turn we ended with the StuH and the Sherman just catching sight of each other. The German player ordered the StuH to pull back and the American player ordered the Sherman to fire and pull back. The StuH drew it's card first and reversed out of sight. As umpire, I ruled that the Sherman followed it's given orders, taking a poor shot at the dissappearing assault gun before backing up itself. So the American tank ends up here:

And the StuH ends up here:

Do you wonder what that is in the foreground? Well, it's an American bazooka team that can't believe their luck! In fact, they have good reason not to believe their luck for no sooner have they drawn a bead on the flank of the German vehicle than a long ripping burst of MG-34 fire sends everyone to the ground.
They've been spotted by the Sd.250

However, the story doesn't end there, because another bazooka team has worked their way into position and might also have a shot on the StuH next turn.

Another American squad is probing in a different direction, but has yet to spot anything.

Nevertheless, their mere presence is making the German panzerfaust team in the foreground pretty nervous about their situation.

The last German squad holed up in the smoldering barn took a few pot shots this turn, prompting the American player to move up their other tank to deal with the situation once and for all.

So the German counter attack is having difficulty gaining any momentum, but confusion seems to be the order of the day in the American camp as well. This is the view from the hq unit that has been trying- and failing- to contact their mortar battery for 2 turns now.

The StuH is certainly getting all the attention, but I think it's the added German boots on the ground that are really going to bugger the Americans.

Unless they can contact that mortar battery, that is.
