This started as a tough turn for the Americans. The pinned squad that had overextended themselves out in front now drew the attention of the the StuH and it's big 105 howitzer. The vehicle pivoted and sent and shell into the American squad...

With devastating results!

The survivors broke and ran back towards the rest of their platoon.

Now the only good news in this exchange was that the StuH stayed relatively stationary for the other bazooka team and they were able to get a good solid shot off.

Unfortunately, the rocket landed a glancing hit that caused little damage.

Back at the first farm, one of the tanks continued to pummel the barn finally forcing what was left of the unit in there to surrender.

The other tanks got rolling forward again hoping to stalk the German assault gun.

The telltale whoosh of the bazooka let's them know they're getting close. Finally the distinctive shape of the StuH comes into view.

And, to finish off, there's this little incident.

One of the American squads sent two figures dashing across the open to draw some fire (like they need to draw more fire!) while the rest of the squad laid down some covering fire. The Americans actually have no idea the German panzerfaust squad is hiding here, although from the German perspective, it seems like they must have been spotted and the Americans are closing for the kill.

I gotta be honest, with the loss of that squad, I don't think the Americans have enough weight to carry on much more. Sure, they still have 2 tanks, but with the reinforcement of panzergrenadiers, the Germans now add another panzerfaust and a panzerschreck to the 2 panzerfaust teams still on table. Not to mention the StuH. We'll see, though. This game has surprised me before!

Here's what happened with that Mexican standoff that ended last turn. The panzerfaust team was able to get off a quick volley that cut down one of the surprised Americans. The survivor is returning fire, but not very effectively.

The Americans finally re-established contact with their 60mm mortar battery and dropped a barrage on the only target in sight- the StuH. This didn't do much except keep them buttoned up (although this factor prevents them from being aware of the Sherman we see in the next couple pictures).

The StuH calmly reversed back to the road, causing the Sherman that was stalking it to advance across the field to maintain line of sight.

What the American tank doesn't know is that this maneuver is exposing them to a panzershreck team waiting in ambush (they're by the tree in the foreground)

Oh, dear. Well, the order of activation will certainly be crucial this next turn.

The other Sherman is getting itself out of the weeds and into a position where it can finally have some effect.

It certainly has the undevided attention of the panzergrenadier squad

So, will the next turn end with another burning Sherman? Will the StuH catch a 75mm AP round through the mantlet? Maybe both?

Stay tuned!

Sam,

This thing is keep going and with a lot of fun.

I bet that the US Paras will need some reinforcements to keep them on the table, unless those Shermans could cut down the Germans.

Keep the pictures coming in Wink Wink

I did say that this game has surprised me before. The American player just pulled off what may end up to be the game-winning ploy.

A little bit of back-story- US Airborne platoons had an organic 60mm mortar team. The US player pulled the 3 mortars out of his platoons and gathered them off-table in a battery firing in direct support of 1st platoon HQ. Now, 1st platoon HQ hasn't been in a position to see shit most of the game, so the paratroopers have been suffering without their mortar support. This changed last turn when finally got in contact with the mortars and brought them down on the StuH. This turn he dropped the range and landed the mortars on the stand of trees and the hill that had been sheltering the bulk of the German forces.

So, first off, this pinned (just barely) the panzerschreck team that was lining up on the American tank.

It also pinned the rest of the panzergrenadiers and the other German infantry squad holed up here as well.

Most excitingly, they dropped a round into the Sd. 250 that had done such an effective job shredding that US squad a couple of turns ago.

The interesting thing is that the American player doesn't know anything about what happened. He knew he was taking fire from this area, but had no idea what units were there. The destruction of the 250 happened completely out of line of sight of any American unit.

Just about the only German unit NOT affected by this barrage is the StuH, which is moving up along the road. The commander thinks that maybe the ground-pounders shouldn't bunch up so much.

The American player is building up an nice base of fire at the farm complex, bringing up a .30 cal team along with the tank.

The German panzerfaust team tries a Hail Mary shot to try and even the odds here.

The hit was a weak one, causing some damage, but not taking the tank out of action. The Sherman responds witha long burst of coax fire that cuts down the panzerfaust gunner and sends his mate fleeing for cover across the road.

Just about the only good news for the Germans this turn is that they broke the morale of another American squad sending more men streaming towards the rear. Unfortunately, no German unit was in a position to see this, so they don't know it happened. Too bad, it might cheer them up some.

So in the end, there was a real shift in the balance of forces this turn, but neither player is aware of it- they only know about their own losses. Will they have the fortitude to keep going?

Great stuff Sam.

So what I expect to hear is the players join up on the Guild and see all of this.

After all this is said and done you will have to invite them so they can see what all we have said. Shocked

Fantastic Sam!! I hadn't looked in on the game for a few weeks so the last two turns were new to me. Seems now basically just two Shermans versus the Stuh left to decide the game?
