Seems I may not have been wrong to paint up some Pakistani T-34s after all...

I have found reference to the Pakistani 15th Lancers being equipped with T-34 tanks during the 1971 war.

Anyone have any further info on this?

I'm pretty sure Pakistan never has T-34's at any time

Wiki (FWIW) agrees with me

BYW this is a good link

I went through everything I had and did a long search on the net - couldn`t find any reference to Pakistan having T-34s. India had T-55s in 1971 though, maybe thats where the confusion comes from?

Piers:

According to the information I have, in 1965 the Pakistanis fielded Shermans, Chaffees, M47s, and M48s (versus Indian PT-76s, AMX-13s, Shermans, and Centurions); two decent, if Indian-biased, sources of orbats for the largest on tank-on-tank engagement are available at http://orbat.com/site/cimh/india/assaluttar.html and http://www.ordersofbattle.darkscape.net/site/cimh/battles/XI%20Corps%20and%20Battle%20of%20Asal%20Uttar.pdf).

According to an analysis in a 1971 issue of Time magazine (caveat emptor), Pakistan had "Pakistan [had] about 1,100 tanks, including 200 American Patton tanks, 225 Chinese T-59s, and numerous old American Shermans and Chaffees of limited utility" (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,910155-4,00.html); according to the same source, the Indians had "1,450 tanks, about 450 [were] Russian medium tanks, and about 300 Indian-made Vijayanta [license built Vickers Mk.I] tanks."

I hope that helps.

Best regards,

Chris
