Seems to be a constant subject of discussion and strange that as a Tank crewman he seems to have forgotten those countless hours he must have spent with a bore brush.

I only spent a while in Warrior, and wouldn't regard modern Brit ammo as poor quality, but as it was the commanders job to do the do with the bore brush I spent a far amount of time on the front decks doing the Dick van Dyke thing.

Still there's a few tankies on the site who may have a different point of view...

I`m with you mate. Wink

In my experience with 30 mm , 76 mm and 120 mm on Chieftain and Challenger 1 and 2 main armaments and 7.62mm GPMG CO-AX and Comds / Loaders MG all need a good old scrub at bore and chamber end and throughout the length of the bore. As you and I both know janner, any gas effected parts get carboned up. GPMG gas plug inside a can of coke was the usual drill. Wink

He obviously believes what he is writing but that`s not been my experience and when I read his explanation of `the combustion only takes place in the chamber` I decided he has seen little service and is probably a `Walter` type and not fired many rounds himself.

Combustion initiates inside the chamber and the gases produced push the projectile through the length of the bore to shot exit. At this point on a low calibre weapon with no fume extractor fitted that is the end of the story but if a fume extractor is fited then residual hot high pressure gases exit the fume extractor and push the low pressure gases that remain in the length of bore, out of the muzzle.

On MBT the muzzle end gets blackened the most. On the nightmare known as 30 mm Rarden Cannon, it`s a close call between muzzle and chamber end. Crying or Very sad

Yes and inside the muzzle to some extent although that normally gets cleaned by the next round down.
