When did the rockets strapped to the sides of hanomags enter service?

Also what type of unit recived them? Am I right in thinking they went to Pioneer Battalions?

Cheers,

Pete.

You are correct they (mostly) went to pioneer battalions, if we are talking about those on halftracks - they seemed to be issued on a more or less ad-hoc basis

Late 41 early 42 in service

Cheers

Bob

They were also issued to the heavy companies of Panzergrenadier battalions (in the 1944 PzBdes especially) and Panzeraufklarungs battalions, at 2 per company.

The issue to PzAAs is based on a photo in SSPzAA11's history, showing them fitted, and to a Sdkfz 251/9 of all things. In retrospect, it might be a bit of a leap to think all the PzAAs were so equipped- the Nordland mechanics were somewhat creative, even putting 12cm mortars on 251s.
About the PzGrs we're on firmer ground. The equipment of a 12cm mortar platoon included a Wurfrahmen, at least for the Panzerbrigaden. This is clear in the chart in Bruhns' history of PzBde 106 and Hassler's history of PzBde 105. Since each brigade had two 12cm mortar platoons in its heavy company, 2 Wurfrahmen, with 18 rounds each.

Are you sure what was true for the Panzer Brigaden was true for the divisions?

I have then in my notes with the Wurfrahmen - but nothing for the panzer divisions

Cheers

Aris, I know the pic to which you are referring and the rocket is just being carried on the side of the 251/9, there is no way in which it could be fired from that particular vehicle. The rocket, in its crate, is slung on the side not fitted to any type of firing frame.
