The rules we use are Charlie Company

Gamemasters:
Alan
Pete

Players:
John(Company Commander, Captain)
Dave
Bob(soon to become Torso Bob)
Jon
Mike
Stuart(new guy turned up out of the blue)

Positions available:
Armoured Leason officer
1st Platoon
2nd Platoon
3rd Platoon

Sit Rep:

You are Golf Company 2nd Battalion 5th Marines (Golf/2/5)currently
acting palace guard out of Phu Bai,as the only fully organised
infantry company in the base you have been orderd to saddle up and
move North into Hue city following the route Alpha company 1st
Battalion 1st Marines(Alpha/1/1)took 6 hours previous as part of and
armoured thrust into the city(armour Alpha 3/3).They have been in
heavy contact ever since they enterd the city and are now near the
road bridge over the Perfume river, unfortunatley elements of the
804th NVA battalion have closed in behind them,(This looks like its
going to be a meat grinder). We also have reports of VC death squads
roaming the city.

Your Orders:
To move North up Highway 1 across the Causway into the outskirts of
Hue,secure a link with Alpha/1/1 if possible ,but clear a route
through Route 1 as your priority.Due to the high level of civilians
and the low cloud cover any support weapons available must be
directed by the OC ground forces or the FAC(Loach)

Intell.
Reports of the NVA 804th Battalion and local VC,armed with light
weapons/lmg`s and possibbly RPG`s /support weapons.
Map available at Photo section listed as Al Vietnam.(this is a club brief)

Weather:
Once again, has as bean the bane of this campaign low cloud ceiling
forcast for days to come.

Transport:
Elements of Alpha 3/3(the second shipment of vehicles into Hue for
transhipment North to tri Province).

6 x 6x6 Trucks
3 x M113APC`s
1 x M42 Duster

Support:
1 x Loach
1 x Hog

Gunnery Sgt.Mike Seddon shifted uneasily in his seat as his 6x6
trundled up Highway 1,besides seeing the large plumes of smoke in
the distance something felt wrong.

There! he suddenly realised there were no villagers to be seen, not
even the swarm of begging orphans or the flurry of chickens they
usualy kick out at.
`ok men check your weapons again,do it now,i have a real bad feeling
about this one.........`

The camera pans back taking in the winding column snaking its way
towards the plumes of smoke....................

Company Commander Captain John
Armoured Leason Officer:Jon
Air Support:Stuart
1st Platoon: Mike
2nd Platoon:Dave
3rd Platoon:Bob

Ok here we go,all moves in the game based on 1 minute.
John(new to our club and to the game)gave out his orders and
proceeded with turn one.

MINUTE 1:
Jon (ALO)carried Bobs 3rd Platoon onto the board in the three M113`s
moving straight up the causway trying to spot as they whent. At the
same time Stuart( AS) moved onto the game board in his Loach also
spotting towards the Student Centre. The gamesmaster reported back
`uniformed troops moving around in the ruins but seem to be facing
in the opposite direction to your advance.I think all six of them
looked at each other trying to analyse that info(and so the puzzle
begins).
(Each turn everybody takes spotting throws).

MINUTE 2:
1st Platoon debuss and fan out either side of the causway and
immediatley comes under bursts of MMG fire from somewhere in the
vacinity of the French Cultural Centre. While Stuarts Loach hovers
above with his Hog also on board hovering behind him(at this point
the gamemasters explain how the Loach would be`on station` looking
for tragets or being relayed them from the ground commander who
would then order the Hog into an attack run from off board).

New info
comes in through the Loach as it spots 2 M48`s buttoned up in
defensive positions at the traffic island.

MINUTE 3:
1st Platoon having survived the initial bursts of fire with just a
few pinned grunts start to zero in on the MMG.The Loach and the M42
Dusteralso decides to add weight with there M60 and twin
40mm.Gamemasters report the MMG has stopped firing.

MINUTE 4:
2nd Platoon move up the Causway in there 6x6 trucks as2 squads of
1st Platoon edge there way into the student centre and link up with
what now shows to be a unit of ARVN that refuse to fight anymore.

The gamemaster takes the 1st Platoon LT. to one side and in a broken
South Vietnamese accent tells him that they have watched a
VC/black clad squad marshal all the local citizens into the
Elementary School.

He can now also see a US fuel truck splayed across
the road in front of the school.(i think it took about an hour for
the players to notice peice of cotton from this truck leading into
the school).

MINUTE 5:
2nd Platoon debuss and take up the job of clearing the French
Cultural Centre as the last squad of 1st platoon cross the traffic
island to check the Anti TB Centre and the Post Office.
Jon and his command M113 fronts the first M48 with a track nudge, the
gamemaster now brings the tank radio to life and in a heavy american
accent spurts out that they had been part of the Alpha1/1 attack but
had lost there first tank in a hail of RPG`s further up highway 1
and had lost touch with the infantry from then on.They complained
about the lack of fight in the ARVN but decided to stay close to
them until they could move on(mutual comfort i think)As Jon was
there immediate commanding officer they agreed to carry on the
attack under his control and with the infantry support.

MINUTE 6:
2nd Platoon get some crucial spotting throws right and once again
thwart the gamemasters by finding the booby traps in the French
Cultural Centre also an abandoned MMG.
1st Platoon decide after not seeing any VC in the Elementary
School to take the initiative and trip the booby trapped tanker with
bloopa rounds......BOOM....ok the game masters explain the inner
blast radious is a 5" circle this doesnt create to mutch
consternation as it reaches the walls of everything in the area but
no further, the announcement of the 10" outer blast circle on the
other hand isnt met with quite the same enthusiasm. After a few
hairaising dice throws and a lot of singed but otherwise unshaken
troopers BOB receives a new nickname(Torso Bob)as he seems hell bent
on removing everybodys arms and legs.

The Loach and Hog move position and hover over the Paddy Fields
South of the Phu Cam canal(the gamemasters re-iterate the tactic of
bringing on the Hog when targets become available).
The Company Commander(who is taking control quite well at this stage)
is reminded of his orders and that it is not a two day game!
The armour, now with major dice behind it(and all of the infantry
by the way?) storm into the attack, the two M48`s cross the traffic
island and crash through the TB centre and position themselves to
search the oppsite side of the canal and Doc Lao Park. Two of the
M113`s drive straight up highway 1,both to be individually attacked
with RPG`s before reaching the canal bridge(another disaster for the
gamemasters as there dice now seem flawed).
3rd Platoon with the Helo cover start there flanking manouver
through the Southern paddy fields towards the canal.

MINUTE 7:
1st Platoon now have there blood up and with know help from the
armour Torso Bob bloopa`s the school gates off BOOM.....,he has also
found an open man hole cover and some kind of tunnel heading towards
the canal in the basement of the Post Office.Unsure of what to do
about it he contacts his CO who now needing to press on orders`blow
it and advance`.
2nd Platoon assault the hut and garden that the RPG came from only
to have chicom grenades lobbed over the wall at them again with no
effect(aaarrrrggggggg).

The Duster silences it amongst chuncks of flying masonary as the
two M113`s pull back. The M48`s throw spledid dice and spot the AAMG
in the park, although there best dice thrown on spotting they manage
to miss it with fire dice(a stroke of luck at last for the
gamemasters, as this round they had decided to open up on the
Hog). They also silence the second RPG across the canal.
3rd Platoon carry on there plod across the paddy fields to the
sudden splintering of plexi glass and whine of the Hogs engine
from above ...... it dissapears to land damaged and with
injured crew off table.

MINUTE 8:
1st Platoon (now bomb crazy)scratch around looking for something to
make a big BOOM with in the tunnel.
2nd Platoon hit the NVA squad in the garden causing two dead from
across the wall.
3rd Platoon start asking `are we there yet`.

The M48`s take revenge on the AAMG and dont miss this time, the two
M113`s under earlier RPG fire rush the canal bridge and storm
engines reving to the other side, the duster in close support stops
dead on top of the bridge.

The M113`s with a charmed life suvive fire from a captured Marine
mule with its recoiless 106mm (ok what if i just tread on
them....grrrrrrrr).

The Duster in a perfect position to block the road avoids two
further Rpg`s from the Hospital and the Treasurey.

At this point we ran out of time and called it a night.
The fear of what they might come up against rather than what they
did was a phsycological barrier that they seemed to handle quite
well.
We told them thats where you enter the board and from there the
gameboard is a blank canvas.(where they had all the luck and the
VC/NVA had almost none).

Everybody enjoyed the game and i think another big success for our
Vietnam gaming.

Copy of movements and enemy forces:

Cheers Al

It was a great game and I loved playing the `Tanker`.

Just wanted to say that Al had put a tremendous amount of effort (as he always does) into this club game and had trawled all the gear from home to Earlswood. What a star!!
