An old AAR but i dug it out anyway when i found some pics and maps to go with it.
Cheers AL

Hi guys
The pics that go with this AAR are in the photo`s section,
might be easier to follow if you print this and look at the pics

The club has 14 members who wish to play in the campaign so Andy and
myself have decided to base each players force as a Platoon,in
effect creating a Battalion,we envisage four players per game and
more than lightly two Platoons per game although this can obviously
increase and decrease depending on the scenario. The nominated
Battalion commander as his first task must decide where to put his
Hill Top Firebase and his Road Supply/Armour/Arty Base.
The first game is also the players introduction to the Campaign map.

The scenario is that this is a new AO which has a major road and
river network( up to now in the hands of a strong VC force that have
severely harassed supply convoys in and through the area) ,it has
been decided that 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry(Airmobile) will put and
end to this.
The players were shown the Campaign map and told that all known
intel for the area points to a VC base camp/HQ in the area of hill
214 confirmed by LRP missions.

The Battalion commander has decided to mount a RIF (recon in force)
mission on hill 214 as a prelude to the Battalion advancing into the
AO with a view to severely disrupting the VC Command and Control
during this time.

The VC where under orders to fight from the bunkers and only break
contact upon suffering two casualties also that if marker smoke and
aircraft strikes ensue leave the complex and assault the US forces
to stay inside the cover of US infantry.Diced at 5 mins out and due
on board at a diced location was a VC patrol returning to base. Two
areas of punji pits and two areas of home made booby traps were pre
placed on the map along with two coms wires, two trails and two speed
trails all culminating on hill 214.

This is an Airmobile mission of 8 slicks with 2 hogs (to stay on
call after insertion)and 2 A1 Skyraiders with a Bird Dog(the load
out asked for was napalm)2 Platoons and the Company HQ was the US
forces.
The Captain ended up as the youngest player(of 4) with the least
experience (everybody wanted to plan the mission but when it come to
taking the responsibility for it, i had to get them to throw the
dice).
Now the fun starts,i suggest you print this and look at the map as
you read it or vice a versa to make more sense of the game and get
your bearings.

The Captain decided to split his forces into four separate patrol
groups as follows:

Group A (Luke my 17 year old son) The Company HQ , 1st Platoon HQ
and 1/1 squad.

Group B (Pete) 2nd Platoon HQ and 2/1 squad.

Group C (Mike)2/2 and 2/3 squad.

Group D (Charles) 1/2 and 1/3 squad.

There tactics was to approach from three different landing sites to
the north of 214 with A B and C , D was to follow up these landings
if a hot LZ was discovered and if not was to land south of 214 as a
blocking force.
B and C landed safely by shear fluke avoiding the punji pits in the
centre of there LZ,group A was not to be so lucky, both slicks landed
at the same time with 1/1 landing at the front and the company HQ
and the platoon HQ and landing at the back of the LZ .The Captain
had a strange look of shock on his face as he jumped from the
ship, this probably had something to do with the steaks protruding
from his legs,Captain is down, after throwing for the rest of the HQ
groups another three fell foul of the punji traps with serious
wounds,"how do i stabalise the wounded"with a medic"but he is down
too",then keep screaming. On the next move as 1st platoon command and
1/1 formed up to move out we gave some friendly advise about
possibly leaving the platoon medic to take care of the wounded"oh i
got another one then".

Group B and C moved off but were suspicious of the elephant grass
infront of them so in deciding to skirt it thus putting a definate
gap between them.Group B followed the forest for the next few turns
loosing two troops in the process(no not to fire, they just got left
behind).Group C came across a speed trail,we said this was kind of
significant (still just a shrug of the shoulders)well may be you
would radio it in?
The answer back was "may be i would if i had a radio!" (oops)group C
then hunkerd down either side of the trail.

Group D radioed in a request to land at the Captains LZ (was this to
support the downed company command)no it was to pick up a radio! The
next RTO Phase found the acting Captain and Group D discussing them
staying in support, they ran out of time and i cut there discussion
short. In the confusion group D flew off towards there blocking
position.
Group A 1st platoon HQ and 1/1 headed south and sighted the VC
patrol entering the board infront of them,we gave them the drop on
the VC squad and they made good use of it and dropped a VC dead
unfortunately in the ensuing firefight 1/1`s squad leader was
seriously wounded. In desperate need of a moral booster a gunship was
called in and took out two more VC,they bugged out leaving there
dead and moved off board.
Group C now suddenly stood up and advanced up 214(we were dying to
know why this sudden action)"well my orders were to get into
position and advance when Group D landed"
this was of course Group D picking up a radio that pre emptied his
attack! He didn't get far stumbling into a bunker covering the speed
trail, straight away taking a serious wound. The squads formed a line
to bring more firepower down on the bunker causing the last trooper
to edge into the home made booby traps(boom!)another serious
wound, still the squads took control of the situation and after
another two rounds of fire and another serious wound silenced the
bunker causing three VC dead in total, although without a medic one
of the wounded became KIA for the US player.
Group B in the meantime decided to break cover and push up through
the elephant grass almost magically skirting the home made booby
traps there in,they got to the top of 214 and discovered a command
bunker that opened up on them they returned one round of fire and
pulled back down the hill.
Group D had now landed and was advancing over the LZ it had not
used,i asked the question after what happened to the Captain do you
really want to do that?I was assured that the squads were only going
to skirt the LZ this again splitting the squads in there advance, the
right hand squad discovered the second speed trail and moving
towards 214 came to an abrupt halt when the covering bunker opened
up a firefight ensued with no casualties either side. The left hand
squad in line abreast hit a line of bunkers as it crossed the
stream, coming under effective fire and causing three casualties one
dead, one serious wound and one pinned(this squad was unable to take
any further part in the battle due to the concentration of bunkers).
Group D now requested a napalm strike through company HQ after
`popping smoke` to show there position, this fell within a whisker of
the squad that had ordered it(think they will be more carefully next
time). There was a lot of mistakes and such a lot learned i cant wait
till this four play again, next time Luke and Pete will play as part
of Mike and Charles platoons instead of the other way around.

Time ran out and the game ended there.
At this point the VC would expect to be bombed continuously as the
US troops pulled back to watch the fireworks, the whistles blew and
the VC advanced as close as they could to the US troops to avoid the
bombing mainly being cut down in the process, first blood to the
Aircav but not without cost(2 dead and 8 wounded including the
Captain a squad leader two RTO`s and a medic)
Regards Alan

Superb stuff Alan!

Phew ... so inspiring and fun. Thanks for sharing!

Two things:

1) Make sure you insert an interlude in your next write-up of this kind. In order that I can get a Coke and a bucket of popcorn for the next "show" ...

2) maybe I missed it, but which rules did you use?

Cheers

Jimo
