There is a very interesting series of photograghs of the men of this unit on the DAK forum. I was surprised to see that they jumped with their weapons and that most of them were wearing Gebirgsjäger boots, some did have the "jump". The pics are copyright so you'll have to register to see them but it is free and a good site to visit anyway.

All FJ trained to jump with weapons after Crete.

The practice was tried before Crete, but only MP40s were used. After Crete they jumped with rifles and MP40s and also with MG34s.

I have photos of training units jumping with rifles and film footage of them landing, including a very hard landing for a guy with an MG34.

Its my belief that the high number of landing injuries sustained on Leros were due to jumping into high winds with weapons, making the RZ even more unstable than usual.

If interested I have Von Der Heydte's report on traini ng jumps with weapons somewhere... It doesnt seem to have been a problem in good conditions and he goes onto suggest that the cansters be used for more ammo and A/T weapons.
